Day 19: The Final Roll: Birthday Songs, Superhero Detours, and Mileage Errors
The final day of a massive cross-country road trip is always a bittersweet mix of high-mileage focus, reflective highway miles, and the undeniable comfort of pointing the front tires toward home. After weeks of desert heat, mountain passes, and unforgettable roadside encounters, our pack finally split the lanes to make our respective runs back to reality.
Here is how the final leg from Springfield back to the home base went down.
The Morning Log: Breakfast Send-Offs and Birthday Tunes
We rolled out of the Springfield hotel early and met up with Pete and Blake for one last group breakfast to recap the wild run through Kansas before everyone split up. Right before we geared up and kicked the stands up to head our separate ways, we all gathered around to sing a big “Happy Birthday” to “Grandma Mommy” and sent the video straight over to her.
With the celebration taken care of, we were officially in the saddles by 8:00 AM. There wasn’t any time for sightseeing early on; it was just time to tuck behind the fairings, head east, and roll.
The Underground Music Tracker
Dean and I hammered out a solid 210 miles on the first stint before finally pulling off the slab to splash some fuel. While we were standing by the pumps eating a quick snack, a van suddenly pulled up right next to our bikes, and a lady rolled down her window.
At first, because there were plenty of open pumps all around the station, we figured she was just lost or confused about where to pull in. Instead, she looked right at us and said, “I’ve been riding behind y’all ever since Springfield!”
We caught her up on our massive cross-country journey, and she told us she was currently on her way to some underground music festival. You meet the most interesting people at interstate gas stations.
Split Routes and the Metropolis Superman
After the fuel stop, the pack split up to cover the final state lines:
[ FINAL DESTINATION TRACKING ]
————————————————————
Route A (Dean & Me): We hit the interstate and maintained a direct eastbound charge. We rolled heavy straight over the massive Memphis bridge, split the lanes onto I-40, and kept the throttles twisted all the way until we both made it home safe, officially wrapping up an absolutely awesome trip.
Route B (Blake & Billy): They mapped a different eastbound line out of Springfield. They crossed the Mississippi River and made a classic Americana detour to Metropolis, Illinois, to grab a picture with the giant Superman statue. From there, they cut south and east straight through western Kentucky before bringing it home to Nashville.

The Ultimate Rental Compliment
To put the final exclamation point on the journey, we went to turn the rental bike back in. The mechanic on duty hooked up the diagnostics, stared at the console, and muttered, “Look at this error.”
When we looked at the official check-in app on his screen, the system was completely throwing a flag. The Eagle Rider digital error message literally read: “Mileage reading too high, check odometer.”
When you ride so hard and so far that the rental company’s computer system thinks your trip meter is a glitch, you know you did the road trip right.
Trip Wrap-Up: Home Safe
The bikes are officially parked, the engines are cooling down in the home garage, and the gear is getting unpacked. It has been an unbelievable, high-mileage adventure packed with incredible roads, sketchy gravel hazards, failing clutches, dead stators, and great friends.

Thank you to everyone who followed along with the daily logs! Don’t wait, make it happen. Get out on the road and explore our beautiful country and history! Until the next big map gets drawn up… keep the shiny side up, watch out for distracted trucks, and keep the rubber side down!
